Programme overview · v1.1 · October 2026
A practical, full-time 3-month programme that develops machine
connectivity, automation integration, edge deployment and manufacturing data skills through
supervised engineering builds, with AI-assisted coding taught as a professional skill.
Course objectives
- Read industrial drawings, wire protected 24 VDC circuits and diagnose sensor and I/O faults.
- Develop and test PLC logic and HMI screens on Delta DVP/DOP, and port core logic to Mitsubishi FX5U and Siemens S7-1200 rotation stations.
- Connect equipment through serial, Modbus, Ethernet and OPC UA interfaces using device manuals.
- Build Python and ESP32 applications that acquire, validate and transmit machine data.
- Use AI coding assistants responsibly: specify, review, test and defend AI-generated code and configuration.
- Deploy an edge data pipeline using MQTT, Node-RED, Linux, PostgreSQL and Grafana.
- Translate machine signals into alarms, energy trends, production reports and correctly defined OEE.
- Apply introductory OT security practices and deliver documented FAT/SAT and commissioning evidence.
What successful learners can demonstrate
Given a machine manual, a defined tag list and a lab network, a learner can plan
connectivity, collect and qualify data, deploy an edge pipeline, build a dashboard, recover
from introduced faults and explain the solution to an employer.

AI-assisted engineering
Where AI is used
| Weeks | AI use |
| 1–3 | No AI code generation. Electrical work, PLC ladder logic, HMI and protocols are learned by hand; AI may be used only to explain concepts. |
| 4–5 | First two days of each week by hand (Python, embedded C), then AI-assisted builds under the five-step workflow. The Day 20 code-review test is done without AI. |
| 6–12 | AI-assisted for code, Node-RED functions, SQL, configuration files and documentation drafts; every output is reviewed, tested and logged. |
Register addresses, scaling, wiring, voltages, PLC interlocks and safety logic always
come from device manuals and the student, never from AI output. AI is not permitted in
troubleshooting and code-review tests, theory checks or the final practical/interview.
Applied learning
Eight builds, one integrated system
| Build | Hands-on scope |
| 1 · Sensor panel | Protected 24 VDC circuit, sensor I/O, object detection and measurement. |
| 2 · PLC + HMI cell | Delta DVP sequence, count/runtime, fault status and DOP screens; core logic ported to a second brand. |
| 3 · Python collector | RTU/TCP or serial acquisition, validation, timestamps and lab API. |
| 4 · ESP32 node | Embedded C, conditioned I/O, counting, network and RS485. |
| 5 · MQTT pipeline | Gateway/node to broker, topic contract and Node-RED transformation. |
| 6 · Edge deployment | Linux service/container, Git, isolation and buffering. |
| 7 · Energy historian | PostgreSQL, Grafana, kWh deltas, gaps and alerts. |
| 8 · Production insight | Machine events, OEE, SCADA/MES concepts and order linkage. |

Placement preparation
Career readiness
CV and portfolio review, project storytelling, technical mock interviews and employer-style fault
